Otmar Alt was born on 17.06.1940 in Wernigerode (Harz). From 1960-1966 he studied at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Berlin as a master student of Prof. Hermann Bachmann. In the following years - from the influence of informal art to a figurative style, from painting to his first ceramics and bronzes - he exhibited his work in numerous exhibitions and galleries in Berlin and New York, among other places. In 1971 the documentary film "Vorfrühling" (Early Spring) was released, portraying Otmar Alt as an artist. After personal strokes of fate, he moved to Hamm in 1976, where he bought an old farmhouse, which he renovated from the ground up. He created designs for the Rosenthal company and his first large sculptures. In 1992, the Otmar Alt Foundation was founded, and its circle of friends, the Otmar Alt Stiftung e.V., was established.
Otmar Alt received numerous honours and prizes, e.g. 1994 "Citizen of the Ruhr Area", 1998 Federal Cross of Merit award, and 2010 Ring of Honour of the City of Hamm. On the occasion of the artist's 75th birthday, an extensive exhibition tour took place from 2015-2017, and the "Otmar Alt Bible" was published in 2015. In addition to painting, sculpture, ceramics and bronzes, from 1999, Otmar Alt devoted himself intensively to glass as a material and created glass figures and leaded glass windows.
In 2017, the Otmar Alt Foundation celebrated its 25th anniversary with many events and exhibitions.
