The Story Behind Our Sculptures – from Berlin's Heraldic Animal to Global Artwork

The Berlin Bear has been part of the cityscape since the 13th century and, as Berlin's heraldic animal, is the capital's best-known symbol. It stands for strength, joie de vivre and Berlin's unique identity. From this tradition, an idea emerged in 2001 that made the Berlin Bear famous far beyond the city limits: Eva and Klaus Herlitz developed the Buddy Bear with the aim of bringing art into public spaces and connecting people from different cultures.

Together with the Austrian sculptor Roman Strobl, they created the first models of the Buddy Bear sculpture – including the dancing Buddy Bear, the Acrobat and the Mini Friend. These characteristic shapes still form the basis of all Original Buddy Bear artworks worldwide.

Most sculptures are created in our studio in Berlin-Mariendorf from blanks carefully made of glass-fibre reinforced plastic (GRP) and given a white primer. On request, companies, institutions and artists can collect their sculpture directly from our Berlin workshop.

Just how international the Buddy Bears have become was already demonstrated by the United Buddy Bears exhibition in Tokyo in 2005/2006. The artist Frank Rödel designed a two-metre Buddy Bear for it, which he presented at the opening together with German Federal President Horst Köhler and Japanese Prime Minister Junichirō Koizumi.

A Berlin art idea has grown into a worldwide cultural project: today the Original Buddy Bears stand outside more than 100 German embassies and ambassadors' residences on every continent. With the United Buddy Bears, the iconic sculptures have also travelled to more than 30 cities in over 35 countries on five continents, and they continue to stand for peace, freedom, tolerance and understanding between nations.

Which Buddy Bear Sculpture Is Right for Your Project?

Bases and Pedestals for Your Buddy Bear Sculpture

To make sure your Buddy Bear sculpture is displayed safely and to its best advantage, we offer various base and pedestal solutions tailored to the size of the sculpture and the intended use. Whether in a corporate foyer, at an event or as an outdoor bear sculpture – the right base ensures a secure stand and a high-quality presentation.

For our 2-metre Buddy Bear sculptures, a sturdy concrete slab for outdoor use and an elegant steel plate for indoor use are available. Both options provide a secure stand and blend harmoniously into different surroundings. The 1-metre sculptures can be displayed either on a modern metal pedestal or on a classic black wooden base. While the metal pedestal creates a contemporary look, the wooden base is particularly suitable for representative reception areas, hotels or exhibitions.

For the sculpture "The Friend No. II", a matching seat is also available, which complements the figure functionally and opens up new design possibilities.

On request, we also produce individual base plaques or inscription plates. These are ideal for corporate foyers, embassies, museums or event appearances and can bear, for example, a company name, a project or a dedication.

All base and pedestal options are optional. Of course, we also deliver every Buddy Bear sculpture without a base, so that you can realise your own presentation solution or install the figure directly on site.

Process: How to Order Your Buddy Bear Sculpture

Every Original Buddy Bear sculpture is produced as a high-quality bear blank made of glass-fibre reinforced plastic (GRP) with a white primer. Our sculptures can be ordered as blanks directly in the online shop under "Sculptures". In addition, we support you personally in selecting and realising your project. The result is an individual bear sculpture that fits your company, your organisation or your personal project perfectly.

You have three basic options: you order an unpainted blank and have your Buddy Bear sculpture designed by your own artist. Alternatively, you choose one of the many existing motifs by our Berlin artists and receive an already designed original sculpture. Or you opt for a completely individual design according to your own ideas, accompanied by our team.

For example, with your corporate design and your logo on the base plaque. This creates a unique company sculpture that makes your brand visible and stays in people's memories for a long time. At the same time, it embodies the universal values of the Buddy Bear.

All Buddy Bear sculptures are available at the regular standard price. In addition, we offer our preferential price model: you receive the sculpture at a reduced purchase price and at the same time donate a fixed amount directly to one of our social projects. For the 2-metre Dancer, for example, the standard price is €2,700 net, or alternatively €2,550 net plus a €150 donation. The total amount stays the same – while you make your social commitment visible and link your Buddy Bear sculpture with a lasting contribution for children. This model is particularly suitable for companies as part of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and effective corporate communication.

The ordering process is straightforward: send us your enquiry using the contact form, and we will promptly prepare an individual quote including design options, schedule and delivery date. Once you approve it, production of your sculpture begins. We then deliver the Buddy Bear safely to the location of your choice, or you collect it in person from our studio in Berlin-Mariendorf.
