Julia Kurtu was born in 1959 in a family of artists in St. Petersburg. She participated in numerous exhibitions in the (back then) USSR from 1981. She graduated in ceramics and glass at the Mukhin Academy - today: Stieglitz Academy of Industrial Art and Design - in St. Petersburg in 1982. She taught ceramics at the Art Academy in Chishnau (Moldova) and worked in the Association of Artistic Workshops, as well as at the children's magazine "Alunel" and the satirical magazine "Ciperusch". In 1985 she became a member of the Union of Artists of the USSR and in the Moldavian Republic. Julia Kurtu made several study trips to Latvia and the USA.
Since 1994 she lives and works in Berlin as an art teacher, ceramist and draftswoman. She drew portraits and sketches at art markets and fairs. She also participated in the International Cartoon Competition in Lagnau (Switzerland). Since 2003, Valeriu Kurtu together with her husband runs her own gallery-workshop under the name "Kurtu-Art" in Berlin.
